Larnaca Castle and the Seafront: a changing coastal gate
Follow Larnaca Castle from a late-medieval coastal fortification to a museum on the seafront.
The first fortification on this site is dated to the late 14th century. In the Venetian period it was strengthened while Larnaca’s coastal trade, including the export of salt, made the shore an important place to protect.
The Ottomans rebuilt the castle in 1625; later it served as a police station and prison during the British period. Today its museum setting makes the seafront a useful place to read the city’s changing public roles.
